The Compass Box company has adopted the label "artisan scotch whiskymakers." They use whiskies from many active distilleries, such as Ardmore, Caol Ila and Laphroaig, selected for specific characteristics, and combine them to create custom blends. These are sometimes aged further in designer casks, such as toasted French oak, to achieve the desired profile for the finished whisky. Their releases have stylish modern labels and creatively descriptive names such as "Spice Tree", "The Peat Monster" and "Flaming Heart".
A newcomer to the world of whisky, Compass Box was founded in 2000 by American entrepreneur John Glaser, formerly a marketing director at Johnnie Walker. Believing that blended grain and malt whiskies have been the mainstay of the industry for two centuries, Glaser's goal was to use his passion for whisky and his knowledge of traditional production methods to push the evolution of new approaches to blending, and new techniques in aging and maturing the whiskies.
Although Glaser is American, the headquarters for the Compass Box Whisky Company are in Edinburgh, and the whiskies are all bottled in Scotland.
The Compass Box Whisky company motto is "share and enjoy."
