Navy Strength Gin

Navy strength is a term that originated way back in yesteryear when British Royal Navy sailors were allotted a daily amount of gin and began questioning the quality of what they received to ensure they were being given a proper gin. To provide "proof" that what they received was legit they mixed a small amount of the gin with gun powder, if it did not light then the gin was less than 114 proof, and therefore unacceptable. And so the term navy strength is used to describe a gin bottled at 57% ABV, not being sailors, we call anything 100 proof and above, "overproof".
