Talisker Distillery

Nestled in the rocky hills on the west coast of the Isle of Skye, Talisker is the only distillery currently operating on the island, located to the west of the Scottish mainland. Although one of the more remote distilleries, Talisker is a prized destination for whisky tourists willing to make the journey, receiving about 40,000 visits a year.

Founded in 1830, the distillery produced whisky continuously until 1960, when a worker forgot to close the valve on a still before a production run. When the container began to fill, spirit leaked into the coal fire below, and the resulting blaze destroyed the still house and everything in it. After the fire, exact replicas of the stills were created, and the distillery resumed production two years later. Within a decade, the stills were converted to use steam heating instead of the dangerous and inefficient coal fires.

A whisky with a heavier style, Talisker is moderately peated, presenting with a bold and expressive island flavor profile, especially in the younger bottlings. Spirit from this award-winning distillery is prized both as a single malt, and as a flavorful component of blends, most notably the Johnny Walker range.

    Color: Warm gold.

Nose: Unreduced, a quiet nose, not hugely assertive, yet quite maritime. Fresh ship’s varnish. Faint nose prickle. Spicy, briny, with distant smoke.

Body: Smooth and firm in body.

Palate: At bottled strength, a gentle start, immediately building in intensity. Slow and sweet, then kicks in peppery and hot, with significant balancing bitterness and salt, and a little smoke.

Finish: Long, warming, slightly bitter and very drying, with a little smokiness.

"Comes across initially to me as reserved, perhaps even elegant for a Talisker. Soothing too, with an oily texture. Quite fruity (orange, tangerine, apricot), perhaps even floral, with a delicate pastry sweetness. Then the more traditional Talisker notes kick in -- brine, seaweed, warming pepper -- repeated in the finish. A high-quality Talisker; albeit a bit reserved at times. I love the oily, viscous texture." -John Hansell, Whisky Advocate Spring 2010">
